The U.S. flag and the Progress Pride flag are now on display on the flagpole in front of the First Parish meetinghouse. This combination of flags is intended to convey our congregation’s desire for a healthy patriotism that includes people of all identities and colors and backgrounds, values the well-being of all Americans, and is committed to sustaining and improving American democracy and civil society. In this time when the U.S. flag and U.S. patriotism are sometimes seen as the property of militarists, white nationalists, or other groups promoting division, hate, and violence, we affirm our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of all people, the democratic process, and justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. For an exploration of the multiple meanings of the U.S. flag to First Parish members, see the January Spire.
