“How First Parish Helped Me Become a Christian”

In 2012, I spoke at First Parish about an extraordinary event that led to my conversion to Christianity. I will retell that event and provide an update about what has happened since, especially about how the teachings and support from First Parish over nearly 30 years have equipped me for a path that has turned out to be wonderfully rewarding, wonderfully disappointing, and, above all, not what I expected.

During the summer our worship is led each week by a member of our congregation. Josh Davis began attending First Parish with his family in the mid 1990s. For the following 20 years, I served in a variety of leadership positions, including chair of the Parish Committee, and was involved in many church activities. He believes that the way of looking at the world learned through his time at First Parish, enabled him to respond to a spiritual experience in 2009 by embarking on a religious Odyssey exploring Christianity and his faith. Josh has met many people on this journey and learned many things that he often views as expansions of the principles and ways of being that grew in him as a Unitarian Universalist.
