In The Interim!

Our Interim time has begun at First Parish.  Following the Unitarian Universalist Association’s framework for when a Minister leaves a congregation, the “Interim” is a two-year period to prepare for and hire a new Settled Minister.

Our Search Committee selected Rev. Dr. Jonipher Kwong to be our Lead Interim Minister. He was heartily endorsed by Parish Committee and joined us August 1.

Central to the Interim process is the Transition Team. Rev. Jonipher and the Parish Committee are in the process of selecting the team who will work closely with the Minister and the congregation as we learn more about ourselves and set goals for the future.

Rev. Jonipher and the transition team will work together to create opportunities to gather input from the congregation and share what they learn as we go through the discernment process.  Be ready to try new things as we explore how we see ourselves and what we would like to see in the future.

The Work of the Congregation During the Interim Period

The UUA provides these five focus points to guide us through the process of “discernment”, that is understanding the desires and needs of the congregation that will help us in selecting a called minister. We’ll also explore new models of staffing, lay leadership, ways of doing things, and priorities.

Heritage: reviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed

  • The congregation’s heritage, both corporate and individual, is the foundation upon which the present rests. Paying attention to heritage means encouraging and hearing all of the stories about the congregation’s past, and embracing the rich variety that makes up this particular congregation.

Leadership: reviewing the membership needs and its ways of organizing and developing new and effective leadership

  • Transition time provides opportunity for individuals and the congregational organizations to examine the types of leadership needed. New leaders will emerge, while some seasoned leaders may re-commit or may decide to refocus their gifts.

Mission: defining and redefining sense of purpose and direction

  • The primary work in this area involves clarifying the faith community’s identity and core values, working to develop mission and vision statements, and perhaps even working out short-term tactical plans.

Connections: discovering all the relationships a faith community builds outside of itself

  • Sometimes congregational life is so busy that congregations and their leadership forget to attend to their connections both to their denomination and to the network of communities around them. Transition is an appropriate time to reassess old links and to consider new ones.

Future: developing congregational and pastoral profiles

  • Focusing on the future requires a healthy and honest assessment of the other focus points so that the congregation can turn its energy toward proactive decision-making for the future. The Intentional Interim Leader offers the congregation a variety of possibilities to engage the Five Focus Points.

Kay began coming to First Parish in 1993 with her family. She has chaired the Stewardship, Finance, and Human Resources Committees, as well as serving on the Parish Committee, Trustees, and Committee on Ministry. She was honored to accompany the youth group on their service trips to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Tuba City, AZ. Now retired, her career focused on supporting social justice nonprofits. Kay treasures the First Parish community and looks forward to helping it thrive during this time of transition!

Marc Jacobson, Transition Team

Marc has attended First Parish since 2011 and has been a member since 2014. He has served on the Committee on Ministry for the past three years, co-led Rev. Erica’s search committee, and was part of Stevie’s search and transition committees. Marc and his wife Sharon have two sons (now 12 and 15) who have grown up in the RE program, and he is especially committed to intergenerational programs. He also has a long association with the UU Urban Ministry and currently serves as a delegate to the organization. Marc works in the tech industry and he is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Transition Committee and support our cherished community in this important time.

Lida Junghans

Lida Junghans, Transition Team

Lida has been coming to First Parish since 2001 when she was seeking a framework for her then four year old daughter to explore the BIG questions. She soon noticed that what was happening in the sanctuary nourished her in ways she hadn’t realized she needed sustenance in. She has been an RE teacher, CoA & YG mentor, Lay Minister, chair of Leadership Development and Committee on Ministry, and participant in many ad hoc projects. She has thrived at First Parish where she has developed deep connections and awareness of her spiritual compass. Trained as a cultural anthropologist/ethnographer, she works professionally with organizations going through leadership transitions and is excited to support Rev. Jonipher in his/their ministry with us.

Lois Fine

Lois Fine, Transition Team

Lois Fine is a long time member of first Parish who has served on the Parish Committee, as founding co-chair of the social justice and the racial justice committees, and as a member of two second minister search committees.   She now serves on the Membership Committee and as an usher.  She is spiritually nourished by Lectio Divina and the first Buddhist Sangha.

Lois is extraordinarily grateful for our community and for the opportunity to help the congregation reflect on our institutional culture and structures, as well as learn about other models of congregational organization.    She is committed to listening carefully  to diverse voices and approaches.

Selecting a New Settled Minister

Selecting a search committee for our next settled minister is an open process:
  • Any interested member will be encouraged to put their name forward for this work.
  • The Settled Minister Search Committee will then be elected by a congregational vote.
When a Settled Minister is selected, the congregation will vote on the candidate.
According to the UUA, the process of discernment and search can take two years or more.  We currently anticipate that our congregation could vote to call our next settled minister in the spring of 2027, to join us for the 2027-2028 program year.
