SUMMARY:Braver Angels 2: Skills for Disagreeing Better
DESCRIPTION:The world today can be very polarized\, with people of divergent views often unwilling to talk with each other\, or even treat each other respectfully. This pattern is obvious on the American political scene\, but it can also sometimes be seen more locally\, even within the First Parish community\, around issues like Israel and Gaza or how to respond to our history of slavery. STAR has partnered with Braver Angels\, a national organization dedicated to fostering communication across divisions\, to offer a pair of workshops at First Parish.\n  \nThis second workshop\, “Skills for Disagreeing Better\,” will extend insights developd in Part I to communicating with people with whom we have strong differences. As we discuss and demonstrate interactions with people of different views\, we will practice seeking to listen and understand\, clearly expressing feelings and experiences\, and finding common ground\, rather than trying to convince or attack people who think differently than we do.\n  \n“Depolarizing Within” will be on Sunday\, June 2\, 1:30-4:30 p.m.\, and “Skills for Disagreeing Better” will be on Thursday\, June 6\, 7-8:30 p.m.\, both in the Vestry. You can register for this pair of workshops through the E-Bulletin or the Events page of the First Parish website. Participation in the “Depolarizing Within” workshop is a prerequisite for attending “Skills for Disagreeing Better.”\n \nLearn about Part 1\, held on Sunday\, June 2\, 1:30-4:30pm \nPlease register via Realm for both Parts 1 (June 2) and 2 (June 6). SUMMARY:Braver Angels Part 1: Depolarizing Within
DESCRIPTION:As members of a liberal faith community\, we are called on to both live our values and interact respectfully and productively with family\, friends\, and other congregants who have very different views than our own. This two-part workshop\, offered in partnership with Braver Angels (https://braverangels.org/)\, builds the skills to navigate these sometimes contradictory goals. \nThe world today can be very polarized\, with people of divergent views often unwilling to talk with each other\, or even treat each other respectfully. This pattern is obvious on the American political scene\, but it can also sometimes be seen more locally\, even within the First Parish community\, around issues like Israel and Gaza or how to respond to our history of slavery. STAR has partnered with Braver Angels\, a national organization dedicated to fostering communication across divisions\, to offer a pair of workshops at First Parish.\n  \n“Depolarizing Within” will be on Sunday\, June 2\, 1:30-4:30 p.m.\, and “Skills for Disagreeing Better” will be on Thursday\, June 6\, 7-8:30 p.m.\, both in the Vestry. You can register for this pair of workshops through the E-Bulletin or the Events page of the First Parish website. Participation in the “Depolarizing Within” workshop is a prerequisite for attending “Skills for Disagreeing Better.”\n  \nThe first workshop\, “Depolarizing Within\,” will examine the assumptions and vocabulary we bring to thoughts about people with whom we have strong disagreements. We will identify stereotypes we hold (consciously or not)\, explore phrases that help us engage and that create distance and defensiveness\, and discuss how to engage with people who share our views when they express contempt or ridicule for people with other views.\n \nLearn more about Part 2\, Skills for Disagreeing Better\, will be held on Thursday\, June 6\, from 7:00-8:30pm.\n \nPlease register via Realm for both Parts 1 (June 2) and 2 (June 6). SUMMARY:Flash Quilt Day
DESCRIPTION:Please join us and help create the First Parish Harvest Moon quilts for 2024 and 2025! \n Saturday\, March 23\, 10am – 3pm\, in the First Parish Vestry. \nPlease register for this event by email to Carolyn Hodges\, STAR@firstparish.info \nCalling all quilters\, sewists and interested folk!   We will sew together in the vestry offering two projects–\this is an opportunity for us to get a bit ahead of the Harvest moon Fair schedule. \n1) Creating a brand new quilt:   We will be making a simple block.  These will be assembled and quilted for the 2025 Fall raffle quilt.  You will need to bring a working sewing machine (that you know how to use)\, sewing tools and thread.  We also need rotary cutting tools\, rulers and mat (if you have them– and we can share!).  Extension cords and power strips are also a help. \n2)  For Harvest Moon Fair  2024\, we already have a completed quilt top (thank you Wendy Page) — this is ready for hand quilting–   we will prepare (sandwich) the quilt and begin hand quilting this quilt as our 2024 Harvest Moon Fair quilt.  This is an excellent opportunity for those new to quilting and willing to hand stitch. \nEven if you don’t sew we welcome your company cutting and pressing.  Fabric welcome too (100 percent cotton please)–  we will also have a selection.  If you are unable to join us in person and want to help- please RSVP so we can include you too! \nQuestions? contact Carolyn Hodges (STAR@firstparish.info) \nRain date: Saturday April 13\, same time and place.
