DESCRIPTION:Please join the Indigenous Justice Working Group (IJWG) to share your thoughts about the draft of our Land Acknowledgment for First Parish! \n\nIJWG has drafted a land acknowledgment based on our learning to date\, and solicited input from Indigenous leaders\, as well as our own ministers and members of the Social Justice Committee (SJC). We hope to bring this to a congregational vote later this year.\n\n  \nLand Acknowledgement Listening Sessions\n● Virtual Only –Wednesday 1/24 (7pm) by Zoom\n● In Person Only –Sunday 1/28 (11:45am) Parlor post-service\n\n  \nDRAFT LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO CONSIDER: The First Parish meetinghouse is located on the ancestral lands of the Massachusett people\, whose name was appropriated by this Commonwealth.  The White Europeans who took land from its inhabitants through coercion and violence also subjected Indigenous people to forced labor\, relocation\, and genocide. Our faith calls us to acknowledge the truth of our history\, to name the ongoing harms of settler colonialism\, and to work toward repair. DESCRIPTION:The Community Conversation continues…Israel and Palestine\nSunday\, November 5th\n12- 2 pm\, following worship service\nFirst Parish Parlor\n\nOn Thursday October 26\, forty people gathered in the parlor to engage in a conversation about Israel and Gaza. This coming Sunday\, after worship\, the conversation continues. All are welcome. You may bring a bag lunch and nosh. Contributions to share are welcome! \nWe will begin by watching an hour of a forum with four Dartmouth professors about the crisis. The forum was held on October 12. After viewing the forum\, Rev. Marta Flanagan and Rev. Erica Richmond will facilitate a conversation of those gathered. Our goal is not to come up with a political consensus or institutional response\, instead to hear one another and to stay in relationship across our differences. \nThose who participated in the Dartmouth Forum include: \n\nEzzedine Fishere\, an Egyptian novelist\, diplomat and academic who was a leader during Egypt’s Tahrir Square protests\nSusannah Heschel\, chair of the Jewish studies department at Dartmouth\nJonathan Smolin\, a Middle Eastern studies professor who teaches Arabic literature\nBernard Avishai\, an Israeli scholar and New Yorker contributor

DESCRIPTION:An Adult Learning Program at First Parish \nWednesdays October 25 and November 1\, 7 pm \nLed by Rev. Marta Flanagan\, Lead Minister \nIn the First Parish Parlor \nWhat do you Believe?  What do we believe?  For the last 40 years Unitarian Universalists have pointed to the “Seven Principles” at the core of our religious tradition.  But for centuries it wasn’t that way.  Currently Unitarian Universalists in this country are considering a revision of the beliefs and values we hold at the center of our faith.  Marta Flanagan will lead a two-session program on the beliefs and ideas that have been central to Unitarian Universalists in the past and what beliefs and ideas we might make central in the future.  The program will involve reading articles in preparation of our discussions as well as some exploration of our individual beliefs.  The program will also dovetail with sermons Marta is preaching on October 15 and November 5. \nReading materials will be sent to registrants via email. \nReadings for November 1 session. DESCRIPTION:An Adult Learning Program at First Parish \nWednesdays October 25 and November 1\, 7 pm \nLed by Rev. Marta Flanagan\, Lead Minister \nIn the First Parish Parlor \nWhat do you Believe?  What do we believe?  For the last 40 years Unitarian Universalists have pointed to the “Seven Principles” at the core of our religious tradition.  But for centuries it wasn’t that way.  Currently Unitarian Universalists in this country are considering a revision of the beliefs and values we hold at the center of our faith.  Marta Flanagan will lead a two-session program on the beliefs and ideas that have been central to Unitarian Universalists in the past and what beliefs and ideas we might make central in the future.  The program will involve reading articles in preparation of our discussions as well as some exploration of our individual beliefs.  The program will also dovetail with sermons Marta is preaching on October 15 and November 5. \nReading materials will be sent to registrants via email. \nReadings for November 1 session. Erica for a two-part series on transcendentalism and utopia. For our session #1\, we will meet in person to talk about the theological themes of transcendentalism and how Unitarian Universalists understand nature. And for session #2\, we will take a field trip to the Fruitlands museum in Harvard\, MA. There we will learn more about the Alcott family’s attempt to build a utopia. The cost per person for the one-hour guided tour will be $12\, though if money is an issue\, don’t hesitate to ask for a scholarship. This event is capped at 24 people so please register in advance via Realm.
