SUMMARY:Women's Alliance Program: Rev Marta Interviews Shira Hoffer
DESCRIPTION:A Hotline for Israel/Palestine: Rev. Marta Morris Flanagan interviews Shira Hoffer \nSeptember 15\, 2024 – after service\, 12:00 noon\, in the sanctuary and on Zoom \nJoin The Alliance for the first program of its inspirational and thought-provoking new season. This promises to be an engaging conversation between Rev. Marta and Shira Hoffer\, a remarkable Harvard undergraduate who in response to the horrific Hamas attack on Israel\, October 7\, 2023\, founded the Hotline for Israel/Palestine. This text-based hotline provides her fellow students and others a place where they can safely pose difficult questions without being labeled antisemitic or Islamophobic. The text-based hotline provides well-researched and curated resources about the historical\, cultural\, political\, and religious viewpoints underlying the long conflict between these two countries and their inhabitants. \nIn 2024 Shira expanded her outreach by founding the Institute for Multipartisan Education\, a charitable organization dedicated to “increasing and improving [the] capacity for curious approaches to difference and disagreement in educational settings.” \nJoin this event in-person in the Sanctuary or join on Zoom. \nLearn more about the Alliance by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Promoting Democracy Through Your Network
DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing more powerful in promoting an idea than your personal network– family\, friends\, neighbors\, and co-workers. These are the people who are most likely to listen to you and respect what you tell them. However even with these people it’s not always easy to raise politically sensitive issues. Please come to this one-hour workshop to practice how you can influence your network and promote democracy. The session will be facilitated by First Parish member Mary Cummings who has done this workshop several times including for the MTA and UU The Vote. \nStay and enjoy the Community Potluck following the workshop!

SUMMARY:Land Acknowledgment Listening Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Indigenous Justice Working Group (IJWG) to share your thoughts about the draft of our Land Acknowledgment for First Parish! \n\nIJWG has drafted a land acknowledgment based on our learning to date\, and solicited input from Indigenous leaders\, as well as our own ministers and members of the Social Justice Committee (SJC). We hope to bring this to a congregational vote later this year.\n\n  \nLand Acknowledgement Listening Sessions\n● Virtual Only –Wednesday 1/24 (7pm) by Zoom\n● In Person Only –Sunday 1/28 (11:45am) Parlor post-service\n\n  \nDRAFT LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO CONSIDER: The First Parish meetinghouse is located on the ancestral lands of the Massachusett people\, whose name was appropriated by this Commonwealth.  The White Europeans who took land from its inhabitants through coercion and violence also subjected Indigenous people to forced labor\, relocation\, and genocide. Our faith calls us to acknowledge the truth of our history\, to name the ongoing harms of settler colonialism\, and to work toward repair. We commit to being in right relationship with the Massachusett and other Indigenous peoples\, particularly the Mashpee and Aquinnah Wampanoag\, and to finding meaningful ways to offer our resources as we work in solidarity to build a more sustainable future for us all.\n  \nFor more information please visit the IJWG webpage and check out the Acknowledging This Land handout for highlights of our process and action to date.

SUMMARY:Landscape of White Supremacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:***THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 19\, 4:00PM.*** \nJoin us for this two-part workshop to learn more about the landscape of white supremacy here in the Commonwealth. Here’s a description from our presenters:In the first session\, we’ll explore the current landscape of white supremacist activity in New England. We’ll look closely at several groups and individuals and the events they have held. We’ll also discuss other types of less well known activities local white supremacists engage in. We will also discuss Antifa and the Culture Wars. Believing we are not powerless\, we’ll consider the spectrum of resistance\, a tool for discussion developed by the Jewish Partisan Foundation. In the second session we’ll move from the conceptual to concrete and discuss things people and organizations can do. We’ll conclude with a discussion about kinds of courage while asking ourselves\, now that I have knowledge of white supremacist activity here in New England and in my community\, what type of courage can I muster in order to act. \nSession 1: October 11\, 7pm on Zoom \nSession 2: November 19\, 4pm\, in the First Parish Sanctuary \nEach session is two hours long. While we encourage people to attend BOTH sessions\, you can attend only one.

SUMMARY:Installation of Turtle Island Mural
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Indigenous Justice Working Group and the Religious Education Program \nBack in the Spring of 2023\, the IJWG and the Religious Education program welcomed Aimeé Nicole Snyder Ledwell (Mashpee Wampanoag)\, an indigenous artist\, storyteller\, and educator\, to explore the story of Turtle Island\, the indigenous name for our continent. The children created a beautiful mural reminding us that “Turtle Island Is Our Home”. Aimeé returns on Sunday for a follow-up Time for All Ages to share with everyone. \nCome to the Grady Room after the service\, to see where the mural will be installed\, and join Rev. Stevie Carmody and others from RE and the Indigenous Justice Working Group (IJWG) to celebrate the masterpiece created together\, in our Beloved Community! We will share photos from the spring showing the process of creating this\, and Indigenous Children’s Books will also be on display for you to see!

DESCRIPTION:The Community Conversation continues…Israel and Palestine\nSunday\, November 5th\n12- 2 pm\, following worship service\nFirst Parish Parlor\n\nOn Thursday October 26\, forty people gathered in the parlor to engage in a conversation about Israel and Gaza. This coming Sunday\, after worship\, the conversation continues. All are welcome. You may bring a bag lunch and nosh. Contributions to share are welcome! \nWe will begin by watching an hour of a forum with four Dartmouth professors about the crisis. The forum was held on October 12. After viewing the forum\, Rev. Marta Flanagan and Rev. Erica Richmond will facilitate a conversation of those gathered. Our goal is not to come up with a political consensus or institutional response\, instead to hear one another and to stay in relationship across our differences. \nThose who participated in the Dartmouth Forum include: \n\nEzzedine Fishere\, an Egyptian novelist\, diplomat and academic who was a leader during Egypt’s Tahrir Square protests\nSusannah Heschel\, chair of the Jewish studies department at Dartmouth\nJonathan Smolin\, a Middle Eastern studies professor who teaches Arabic literature\nBernard Avishai\, an Israeli scholar and New Yorker contributor

SUMMARY:Climate Legislation with Sen. Cindy Friedman
DESCRIPTION:The Climate Action Working Group (CAWG) invites you to participate in an online (Zoom) meeting with Senator Cindy Friedman on Monday\, October 30 7pm – 8:30pm. We especially encourage participation from UUs living in the communities represented by Sen. Friedman: Arlington\, Woburn\, Burlington\, Billerica\, and eastern and northern Lexington. \nIn this meeting\, we will hear from Sen. Friedman about her perspectives related to climate legislation\, and will discuss the current legislative priorities regarding climate and environmental justice that CAWG and our coalition partners share.  As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means\, Sen. Friedman can help us understand how climate change legislation can be enacted in a legislative system where that committee has a big role in determining what becomes law and what gets funded. \nClick here to register and receive a link for the Zoom meeting.
