Marta Flanagan and Bonnie Zimmer\nSaturday\, May 4\, 2024 8:00 am to 4:00 pm\nAdelynrood Retreat Center in Byfield MA \nWhat is the next right thing for you to embrace in life? How might you do that well? In this all day contemplative retreat\, drawing on insights of the Benedictines\, a Christian monastic tradition\, and using the tools of Mussar\, an ancient Jewish spiritual\npractice\, we will consider these questions. \nOur time together will include gatherings\, silence\, and journaling.  We will share a breakfast and a silent lunch. \nA fee of $60 covers breakfast\, lunch and rental of the retreat center.  If this fee creates an obstacle please contact Marta (marta@firstparish.info). \nPlease register via Realm. DESCRIPTION:The world today can be very polarized\, with people of divergent views often unwilling to talk with each other\, or even treat each other respectfully. This pattern is obvious on the American political scene\, but it can also sometimes be seen more locally\, even within the First Parish community\, around issues like Israel and Gaza or how to respond to our history of slavery. STAR has partnered with Braver Angels\, a national organization dedicated to fostering communication across divisions\, to offer a pair of workshops at First Parish.\n  \nThis second workshop\, “Skills for Disagreeing Better\,” will extend insights developd in Part I to communicating with people with whom we have strong differences. As we discuss and demonstrate interactions with people of different views\, we will practice seeking to listen and understand\, clearly expressing feelings and experiences\, and finding common ground\, rather than trying to convince or attack people who think differently than we do.\n  \n“Depolarizing Within” will be on Sunday\, June 2\, 1:30-4:30 p.m.\, and “Skills for Disagreeing Better” will be on Thursday\, June 6\, 7-8:30 p.m.\, both in the Vestry. You can register for this pair of workshops through the E-Bulletin or the Events page of the First Parish website. Participation in the “Depolarizing Within” workshop is a prerequisite for attending “Skills for Disagreeing Better.”\n \nLearn about Part 1\, held on Sunday\, June 2\, 1:30-4:30pm \nPlease register via Realm for both Parts 1 (June 2) and 2 (June 6).
