SUMMARY:Shades of Black: The Hip-Hopera (Opening Doors Concert Series)
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Club Passim Folk Collective\, Opening Doors presents “Shades of Black: The Hip-Hopera\,” a free concert and conversation with Zakiyyah at Arlington UU Church. \nZakiyyah is an artist-changemaker who utilizes music and visual media to explore themes that centralize marginalized communities via her production company\, Black and Bold Productions. As an actress and classically-trained singer who is well-versed in opera\, hip-hop\, jazz\, and R&B\, she employs her extremely versatile skill-set to reach a broad range of audiences and craft a sound that is uniquely her own—including her most well-known creation\, “hip-hopera.” She has served as a racial equity consultant through Arts Connect International\, a peer mentor for Music to Life\, an artistic partner with Boston Children’s Chorus\, and currently teaches voice through Harvard’s Holden Voice Program. The show will be hosted by Opening Doors co-founder Alastair Moock. \nThis event is made possible by First Parish UU Church\, Nine Athens Music\, the Club Passim Folk Collective\, the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture\, and the Mass Cultural Council. \nFor more information and to get tickets\, please check out the Opening Doors website.

SUMMARY:Reckoning\, Repair\, & Regime Change Teach-In with the Reckoning and Repair Working Group
DESCRIPTION:How should we carry out the work of justice in a time when government agencies are scrubbing words like “equity\,” “oppression\,” and “racism” from their websites? \nIn the chaos\, fear\, and furor of this moment\, it’s hard to know what to pay attention to. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. But it’s important not to let the current regime drag us off course from the progress we have made. \nLet’s focus on what’s in our sphere of influence\, remembering our shared Unitarian Universalist values and the civil rights movements of the past. \nJoin members of the First Parish Reckoning & Repair Working Group to explore our current context\, find inspiration in the historical roots of the right-wing bogeyman known as DEI\, and build our collective capacity for resistance. \nFood will be served!

SUMMARY:Landscape of White Supremacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:***THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 19\, 4:00PM.*** \nJoin us for this two-part workshop to learn more about the landscape of white supremacy here in the Commonwealth. Here’s a description from our presenters:In the first session\, we’ll explore the current landscape of white supremacist activity in New England. We’ll look closely at several groups and individuals and the events they have held. We’ll also discuss other types of less well known activities local white supremacists engage in. We will also discuss Antifa and the Culture Wars. Believing we are not powerless\, we’ll consider the spectrum of resistance\, a tool for discussion developed by the Jewish Partisan Foundation. In the second session we’ll move from the conceptual to concrete and discuss things people and organizations can do. We’ll conclude with a discussion about kinds of courage while asking ourselves\, now that I have knowledge of white supremacist activity here in New England and in my community\, what type of courage can I muster in order to act. \nSession 1: October 11\, 7pm on Zoom \nSession 2: November 19\, 4pm\, in the First Parish Sanctuary \nEach session is two hours long. While we encourage people to attend BOTH sessions\, you can attend only one.
