SUMMARY:Art Show: "Where I've Been\, What I've Seen"
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION\nSunday\, February 8\, 2026\, 11:45am\, Parlor. \nWHERE I’VE BEEN\, WHAT I’VE SEEN\, is an exhibit of photographs by Peter Southwick\, a longtime member of First Parish. A renowned photo journalist\, Peter also enjoyed documenting his travels. The photos were part of an exhibit that he mounted the past summer at the Booth Bay Opera House. \nPeter Southwick retired in 2017 as Associate Professor of Journalism in the College of Communication at Boston University following a career that included ten years on the staff of the Associated Press and nine years as Director of Photography at the Boston Globe. \nPeter moved to the Boston area to attend Harvard College and earned his BA in Government\, but much of his undergraduate life was spent taking photographs for The Harvard Crimson\, the university daily newspaper. \nPeter entered professional journalism at The Real Paper\, an alternative weekly in Cambridge. A freelance career followed that included work for Newsweek\, Time and Parade. He joined the photography staff of the Boston Herald American in 1978\, and covered such stories as the visit of Pope John Paul II\, the parade of Tall Ships\, and the 1980 presidential campaign. \nIn late 1980\, he moved on to a staff photographer position in the Boston bureau of the Associated Press.  He traveled extensively within the US\, covering everything from the World Series and the Super Bowl to political conventions and presidential inaugurations.   His photos earned awards from the National Press Photographers Association\, Boston Press Photographers Association\, National Headliners Awards\, and the Associated Press. \nPeter moved back to newspaper work in 1990 as photo editor of the Boston Globe\, and after two years was promoted to Director of Photography.  He left the Globe and joined the Boston University faculty in 2002. \nPeter moved to Arlington MA in 1977.  He and his wife Jean Rosenberg lived here from 1980 until he passed away on September 15\, 2025. His work can be viewed on his website petersouthwick.smugmug.com.

SUMMARY:Artist talk by Patricia Crotty – Dialogue: Listening to Nature
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk by Patricia Crotty – Dialogue: Listening to Nature \n“My abstract landscapes develop out of an ongoing process of sketching and observing in nature\, then reworking the images back at the studio. There\, I add and subtract paint\, drawn lines\, and collage materials until the parts come together to form a harmonious whole.” \nPatricia Crotty’s colorful gestural paintings and collages are inspired by nature and the hidden forces that lie beneath everyday experience. Her work reflects the tension between chaos and order\, fluidity and form\, reflecting the natural world’s unpredictability and underlying design. \nCome join us for Patricia’s artist talk on Thursday\, Nov 6\, 7-8:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Reimagining Paul Revere with Narragansett Artist and Activist Sage Carbone
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy this special conversation with artist Sage Carbone discussing her Indigenous beadwork reimagining of Cyrus Dallin’s Paul Revere statue. This will be on display for viewing during this program\, which is co-sponsored by our Indigenous Justice Working Group. Carbone will share how her art relates to her efforts to elevate the histories and perspectives of Indigenous peoples in Greater Boston today through such work as the Indigenous Languages Visibility Project in Cambridge and annual Red Sox Native American Celebration. Carbone views the semi quincentennial as an opportunity to envision what the next 250 years could look like when we engage with history in ways that uplift everyone. SUMMARY:Art Show Opening Reception: September 22
DESCRIPTION:PASSAGES: Paintings by Marilyn Downs \nThe First Parish Art Team is hosting a show of paintings by Marilyn Downs from September 22 – November 15\, 2024 in the parlor. Her oil paintings are primarily landscapes\, drawn from places where she has spent time and felt inspired by what she saw or felt. Refreshments will be served. An artist talk will be scheduled in late October\, date TBA.

SUMMARY:Installation of Turtle Island Mural
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Indigenous Justice Working Group and the Religious Education Program \nBack in the Spring of 2023\, the IJWG and the Religious Education program welcomed Aimeé Nicole Snyder Ledwell (Mashpee Wampanoag)\, an indigenous artist\, storyteller\, and educator\, to explore the story of Turtle Island\, the indigenous name for our continent. The children created a beautiful mural reminding us that “Turtle Island Is Our Home”. Aimeé returns on Sunday for a follow-up Time for All Ages to share with everyone. \nCome to the Grady Room after the service\, to see where the mural will be installed\, and join Rev. Stevie Carmody and others from RE and the Indigenous Justice Working Group (IJWG) to celebrate the masterpiece created together\, in our Beloved Community! We will share photos from the spring showing the process of creating this\, and Indigenous Children’s Books will also be on display for you to see!
