SUMMARY:Alliance Program - Making Sense of the World: Highlights from Our Family Gap Year
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Hunter shares pictures and stories from six months of travel with her family around the world. Planning and pitfalls\, advice and adventures\, lessons and lived experience are all explored as she lays out the dreams and realities of stepping away from familiar routines and completely outside your comfort zone. ALL ARE WELCOME! \nThe Alliance serves First Parish by supporting women in our congregation as well as advancing the interests and efforts of our entire church. With its own endowment and investments\, the Alliance remains a financially independent group within First Parish. The majority of our annual expenditures go to support a charitable giving plan that focuses on organizations that serve women and families in transition. Alliance meetings\, programs\, and activities provide opportunities for learning\, ongoing fellowship\, and rich discussions. Membership in the Alliance is open to those in our church who identify as female; Alliance programs and activities are inclusive across all gender identities and ages.

SUMMARY:ALLIANCE PROGRAM From Guerilla to Grandmother: An Evening with Peace Activist Katherine Power
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Power\, author of SURRENDER: My Journey from Guerilla to Grandmother\, will join us to share her story and talk with us about taking action to bring about change. SUMMARY:Alliance Program: Left on Pearl - Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Left on Pearl is a 55-minute documentary about a highly significant event in the history of the women’s liberation movement.  In 1971 hundreds of Boston-area women staged a takeover and occupation of a Harvard University-owned building.  The ten-day occupation by women demanding a Women’s Center and low income housing for the community in which the building stood\, embodied within it many of the hopes\, triumphs\, conflicts and tensions of Second Wave feminism. One of the few such takeovers by women for women\, this action was transformative for the participants\, and led directly to the establishment of the longest continuously operating Women’s Center in the U.S. \nWe will have the opportunity to watch the film together as a community\, followed by a panel discussion featuring Rochelle Ruthchild\, a founding member of the Women’s Center who was involved in the making of the documentary\, and FP members Mary Fusoni\, Joyce Thompson\, and Jo Ann Preston\, who took part in the 1971 action. \nClick here to join this program online via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Women's Alliance Program: Rev Marta Interviews Shira Hoffer
DESCRIPTION:A Hotline for Israel/Palestine: Rev. Marta Morris Flanagan interviews Shira Hoffer \nSeptember 15\, 2024 – after service\, 12:00 noon\, in the sanctuary and on Zoom \nJoin The Alliance for the first program of its inspirational and thought-provoking new season. This promises to be an engaging conversation between Rev. Marta and Shira Hoffer\, a remarkable Harvard undergraduate who in response to the horrific Hamas attack on Israel\, October 7\, 2023\, founded the Hotline for Israel/Palestine. This text-based hotline provides her fellow students and others a place where they can safely pose difficult questions without being labeled antisemitic or Islamophobic. The text-based hotline provides well-researched and curated resources about the historical\, cultural\, political\, and religious viewpoints underlying the long conflict between these two countries and their inhabitants. \nIn 2024 Shira expanded her outreach by founding the Institute for Multipartisan Education\, a charitable organization dedicated to “increasing and improving [the] capacity for curious approaches to difference and disagreement in educational settings.” \nJoin this event in-person in the Sanctuary or join on Zoom. \nLearn more about the Alliance by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Women's Alliance Program
DESCRIPTION:House of the Rising Sun \nDiane Taraz will present The History of the Oldest Profession in song. For millennia women have turned to sex work to survive\, and societies throughout history have handled its inescapable persistence in different ways. The many songs about this sensitive topic\, including the title song from New Orleans\, are equally varied — bold\, regretful\, rowdy\, and often filled with defiant humor. We will visit ancient Greece and Rome\, Renaissance Venice\, Japan\, Medieval Europe\, and the United States\, using songs to explore surprising facts about this “forbidden” topic. \nRefreshments 7-7:30 (featuring a cookie exchange) \nProgram 7:30 to 9 \nThis is a hybrid event; join us in the vestry or via Zoom. SUMMARY:Women's Alliance Program
DESCRIPTION:Program: Mindfulness to Help Navigate Difficult Emotions \nConflict is inevitable in most relationships. But it is uncomfortable\, and we usually want difficulties to disappear. Drawing on new research in psychology on what makes relationships work\, as well as a mindfulness practice to help us navigate difficult emotions\, Susan Pollak\, MTS\, Ed.D. will teach us ways to befriend conflict so what we think of as obstacles can become opportunities. \nDr. Pollak is cofounder and teacher at the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at Harvard Medical School / Cambridge Health Alliance. \nRefreshments 7-7:30\, Program 7:30 to 9 \nThis Alliance meeting is both in-person and on-line.
